99 Taurus Tranny dilemma

Hi,

The transmission on my 99 Taurus needs rebuilt.
Here are the possible options:
1. Rebuilt by Eagle Transmission. $1850. 12 month warranty.
2. Buy from Salvage yard w 51k miles and get it installed by a shop. $550+$430=$980. No warranty.
3. Have the salvage yard put one in. $1165. No warranty. But if doesn't work they will put another one in right then and there.
4. Buy from ebay(Phoenix) remanufactured and get it installed by a shop.
$695 + $260 (shipping) + $430 (labor) = $1385. Warranty on part, not labor.

I would like to drive this car another couple of years. The engine has 98K miles and in excellent condition. Which option would be best for me?

Thanks.

Re: 99 Taurus Tranny dilemma

is this an AX4S or AX4N transmission

for an AX4N I'd go with the salvage yard one installed by them, for an AX4S I'd go with the Phoenix transmission.

Re: 99 Taurus Tranny dilemma

Eagle transmission sez AXOD-E overdrive transmission. The lettering on the transmission tag all wiped out. The pan sez AXOD METRIC on it.

Tranny type

The best way to find out what Tranny you have is to e-mail / call / stop in at your local major Ford dealer & give them your VIN. In fact, if you stop in with your VIN when they're not too busy and say please they may even print you out a "Vehicle Build" list that shows everything your vehicle was built with including Tranny type, very handy to have.

if the pan says AXOD METRIC then you have an AX4S

Re: 99 Taurus Tranny dilemma

This car is at a salvage yard getting another AX4S put in. Total cost: $800. 60 day warranty.
The reason I did salvage yard is if one tranny doesn't work they can put in another.

What exactly to look for when I pick up the car?
