Question Help! Engine stumbles for a second with engine light on momentarily 95 525i

Since last Friday, my car has been stumbling for about a second, then resumes OK. When it stumbles, the check engine light usually comes on, but does not stay on. Other than this, the engine seems to run just fine. I experience this especially when I start from a stop sign and when I push the gas pedal a little hard, but it happens in higher speed as well occasionally. When I accelerate slowly, I don't have this problem. I just changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, and added a red line fuel system cleaner in addition to a new air filter. It has been only 2 weeks since the oil change. I visually checked the wires and hoses, which seem okay. What is going on? Did anyone have similar problems and how did you guys fix it? What everyone thinks? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I have the exact same issue with my 95 530i. So far I can go into great detail as to what it's NOT, with the receipts to prove it.

In the mean time, getting on the freeway is an adventure.

Yes, it was a sensor problem, crank position sensor I think. Actually, mechanic changed both crank and throttle sensors. After changing them, he showed me the crank sensor, it was really bad. Good luck.

Re: Help! Engine stumbles for a second with engine light on momentarily 95 525i

I have a 95 525i that was failing emissions testing here in Las Vegas. It's turned into quite a project because part of the problem was the variable cam actuator, which is oil-pressure activated. My mechanic determined that I was losing oil pressure past where the pump bolts to the bottom of the block. The replacement pump was obviously beefed up to compensate for the shortcomings of the stock one.
Since the lifters are hydraulic also, I was losing performance there.
The on-board computer is very powerful and compensates immediately for all these problems so it felt like it was running fine. Then came the emissions test. There is SO much in this car that requires good oil pressure! Have yours checked, too.
