Angry Yet another Transfer Case Question!

After getting the quote from the Jeep dealership re: replacement parts I started calling around. Best price I've found on transfer cases is from Rockland. Best price I've found for doing the work is from a local mechanic that I trust. He's never replaced just the VC before but I'd trust him to do the work on the whole TC.

After calling Rockland I learned that
  • I could buy a rebuilt transfer case with a VC
  • I could buy a rebuilt transfer case WITHOUT a VC.
Without the VC, a wheel would still spin. With the VC the spinning wheel would STOP spinning as traction was shifted to the other wheels.

The price of the rebuilt TC without the VC is better than the price of the rebuilt WITH the VC. I'd STILL probably have better performance on ice or in snow with the AWD than I've had up until now with just FWD vehicles.

So--does it make sense to get a transfer case without a VC in it? At this point, that's what I'm thinking would be my best option.

I may not be able to go to my local mechanic, though, because I'll probably have to use whatever company the dealership where I bought the Jeep wants me to use if I want them to honor the warranty. (Got a call in to talk to the BIG boss there, btw....)

IMHO - I'd go with the NP242. It offers a fulltime 4wd postion without the hassles of a VC. It also has a 2wd postion which should net you better mileage. Plus you said it was cheaper. Just my 2 cents.

Okay, I'm confused. As I understood it when talking with the guy in NY about the transfer case, I had the option of getting a 249 with a VC or a 249 without a VC. Is the one without the VC a 242??

If you're switching from a 249 to a 242 doesn't this change how it's installed? And can't the installation be more complicated?

Re: Yet another Transfer Case Question!

The 242 is what he was meaning without the VC and there are a couple of other changes required to complete the instalation... The indicator by the TC shifter needs to be changed and the vehicle information center programed for the 242 TC.

Not a huge additional task but necessary.

there are several of these swaps discussed on here in the last while. you can do a search on the transfer case numbers to find them.

There is no 249 without the VC to my knowledge.

Re: Yet another Transfer Case Question!

I was told that my options were either the same 249 that i have now or another without the vc(they never gave it a number i assumed it was the 242)

but is it possible they would replace it with the 247 quadra trac II
