Thumbs down Taurus Problems

I am pretty sure I need a new transmission, but I'd figured I'd ask first before even going through the trouble.

It began 4 or 5 months ago, tranny was having problems so I had a mechanic check it out. He dropped the tranny pan and found "clutch material" in the bottom of the pan. He clean it out and put a new filter/tranny fluid in it.

About a month ago my grilfriend and I was coming home from a wedding, going about 60mph, and the tranny feels like it's binding up, or like someone slammed on the brakes for a brief moment. It did it off and on all the way back to my house.

It was doing fine with only me driving, and when I would have someone in the passenger seat, the tranny would feel like it's binding up.

Now it shifts horribly, doesn't down shift right. I'll my foot on the gas, sometimes it accelerates, sometimes it slips, sometimes it feels like it binds. Usually it slips then binds. Sometimes I'll be coasting at 45mph and you can feel the tranny kicking in and out. You can even see the speedometer increase when this happens. It really only screws up the worst when not in overdrive. It does fine on the highway, if I am just by myself. It almost like it can't decide what gear it wants to be in. Most of the time it feels like I am pulling a ton of bricks, and the car is using an ungodly amount of fuel. It's a nightmare going up hill. There is a lot of play when you move the wheel back and forth when it's jacked up. The car has 201,000 miles on with a 3.9L V6. Any help would be very grand.

Thanks,
Pete

Re: Taurus Problems

it might just need a rebuilt torque converter, those sounds like torque converter problems and not problems with the transmission itself.
