Ban pit bull dogs.

The province of Ontario (Canada) is seriously considering an outright ban on pit bull dogs, or at least severe restrictions.
Many municipalities have such bans, with success, but this one is provice wide. The city of Winnipeg recently passed such a bylaw, and their annual pit bull attacks on people went from 25 per year to just 2 last year.
It seems that several times a year there is a highly publicised severe mauling in Toronto of some person, often a complete stranger or a child, by pit bulls.
Attacks by pit bulls on other dogs are more common and usually go unreported in the media. This week alone, there have been 3 seperate attacks on other dogs in Toronto, often resulting in the death of the other dogs.
Do you agree with such a ban?
I am on the fence on this one. I have been bitten by enough dogs to know it's very unpleasant, but I do not want to infringe on the activities of others.
However, even my dog-loving friends agree that pit bulls (and to a certain extent, malamutes) are prone to truly psychotic episodes and are not stabe, safe animals.
Some may balme the agressive training by the owners, others say the breed is to blame.

dogs arent inherently aggressive. we have a rottweiler thats as sweet as can be - protective but not violent.

its the people not the dog, let them have their pit bulls.

Rottweiler here too. One of the smartest dogs I ever owned. He is a big baby around us but is very protective when strangers come around.

I never liked the way pitt bulls looked. So I say go ahead and ban them. While they are at it they can ban poodles and pugs.

no dont ban pit bulls. most of them are fine, not a strand of anger in them. just that some people feel the need to make te dogs ferocious.

I disagree with the fact that pit bulls should be banned and are a threat. There is a very sick stereotype of them b/c so many are trained to fight. Yes some may just have a natural agression in them, but all breeds of dogs have their agressors. My roomates dog completely changed my view on them. She is the absolutely the sweetest dog there is and she is very very loyal. She has never attempted to attack anyone, all she does is lick everyone to death and wants just wants attention. Hell, she even got excited when the FedEx guy showed up.

The only time she's ever gotten protective was with a pizza guy. He tried to walk up in the apartment like we invited him in to party or something. There were several of us at the apartment and she sat about 8 feet from the door growling looking very pissed. But she was just doing what a good dog does.......protect the people she knows, protect her home. If anyone thinks pit bulls are all mean find people who have raised them with love since a puppy and you'll see how friendly they are.

I think the problem lies in the people that raise them. I don't think one breed of dogs ought to be made 'extinct' unless someone can prove that the breed itself is bent on agression. Though considering how often it's pitbulls and not other dogs that attack, something definitely has to be done.

Personally, i'm allergic to dogs so i just don't interact with them.

There was some statistical thing on the news a while back which showed that labradors were responsible for most dog attacks in NZ. So shouldn't they be banned too?

We might get a pit bull ban. Couple days ago a guy felt like he needed to get hie ( NOTICE drugs are in this story) and felt like he needed to hit a pit bull and then " Dick slap it". I think everyone will know what happened to his " dick ".

i'll repeat what someone else already said in this thread.

it is the PEOPLE who train/raise the dog that give it aggresive tendancies and an aggresive attitude, NOT the dog.

end of story. if my stupid province decides to ban them, then that's a stupid unlogical decision that unfortunatley i have no say in.

Exactly. If your dog is mean, it's probably your fault. Don't blame the dog, don't blame nature, it's YOU. If you are mean and malicious to the animal, that is what the animal will know.

Some of the loudest supporters of the ban are other dog owners. Pit bulls attack and kill other dogs much more often than people.
