engine stops

Tuesday, August 31, 2004

1995 gmc vandura 5.7L

on a recent trip I took to showlow arizona by way of mesa. the engine shut off or guit.
I had just left mesa and was about 40 miles out going up hill. the temperture was 108
air was on and was running a fan and a cooler from cigarette outlets. the temperture gage
was was not at the half mark and the engine was running fine. I had it in overdrive but it kept
shifting down to third. I retried to start it and it fired right up. it did this every 4 0r 5 miles for about
3 or 4 more times. it didn't guit the whole time I was in showlow or going back to mesa. the temp
in showlow was in the 80s,and when i left it was early morning 6am and mostly downhill but still with
some steep grades maybe 8 or ten miles long. didn't use air or fan or cooler.total about 380 miles
since last guit. when I left mesa it guit again 30 miles outside of blythe. about 150 miles from mesa
and then again about 30 miles out of blythe. it did it a couple more times within the next 100 miles
and then once about 30 miles further. temp was 107 going through desert. temp gage was again
below half. and engine was running smooth cruise control 75 mph. once i got to riverside. i drove in
to L.A. no problem. I changed the inline fuel filter and did a tune up. the fuel filter was pretty dirty.
could barely blow through it I won't know until it happens again
