Dirtbike clutch

Do dirtbikes use centrifical clutches? If so, would I be able to use the centrifical clutch off a dirt bike on a go kart? Also, what size are the disk brakes on sirt bikes? thanks - andrew

Re: Dirtbike clutch

ya they horizontal drive shafts you coulds put a dirt bike motor in a go cart very easy. as soon as i get a frame ima putt a 185s motor in it,it has a centrifical clutch and 5 speed its gonna be fast. oh the power a dirt bike has depends on the dirt bike i think the 250s have about 40- 50 horse power but im not real sure if you had a 250 go cart it would be 1 fast ass go cart

Re: Dirtbike clutch

There are lots of go-karts using dirt bike engines and transmissions. They are called 'shifter karts' and they have their own racing classes.
It's easy to adapt dirt bike clutch and gear box to a kart, as is. Many factory built karts come this way.

Re: Dirtbike clutch

4-wheelers have a centrifical clutch and a secondary clutch operated by the shift lever. A 4-wheeler engine would be easier to shoe horn into a cart, the only controls needed would be throttle and shifter (and reverse engagement if it has it). The only bad thing is that ATV engines aren't really that powerful.
A 250 2-stroke would run circles around an ATV but with the clutch control and a cooling system, it would be harder to install- but well worth the trouble.
No matter how fast it is, you still need to stop. Make sure you have good brakes too.

Too bad there isnt a go kart forum. That would be sweet. Then people could post pics of their go karts, go carts in progress, talk about idea's share plans ect.

Re: Dirtbike clutch

I'd like to se a go kart with an engine from a sport bike, like an R1 or a ZX-10. That would be like a go kart on steroids....150+ HorsePower!!!

Re: Dirtbike clutch

My friend built a go kart frame and dropped in an IT 250 motor in highshool shops... couldn't get it out of 2nd gear... way too fast for the suspension, wheels, etc...

If your building your own, start small and work up checking for design problems along the way (braking, engine load, frame and suspension fatigue, acceleration, unusual tire bulges, etc....)

Re: Dirtbike clutch

Most new 2-stroke 250cc dirtbikes put out around 40-44 horsepower. There are very few dirtbike motors that use horizontal drive shafts, but they are used often on utility atv's and some cruiser motorcycles. It will be hard to build an off road cart, especially one with almost 50hp. With that much power you will need some good suspension and a well thought out chassis. Most of the off road karts are made for a 5 hp motor and some of them are only one wheel drive. I drove a shifter cart for the first time last night-holy crap!!! I need to sell my wrx!!! Great fun. While I was going to school in phoenix a friend of mine worked for a custom fab shop. I spent lots of nights working on my bike there. They built a R1-yes 1,000cc street bike motored go kart with an atv front end(welded on banshee front end with plus 6 a-arms) a swingarm type rear suspension with an air bag. They used NOS bottles to store the CO2. Full roll cage and sand tires. ever been in a go kart doing a 40mph weelie? FUN!!!!!

Re: Dirtbike clutch

ya i was gonna say the 250's dont put out 50hp, the 500 put out 50 or so hp and just a s much torque

my friend has a go kart with a 125 motor in it and he just connected the motor with a chain to a welded sprocket on the axle. he welded some linkage on the shifter and made a little shifter on the go kart. its not that accurate but it works. and yes the go cart flies
