making custom air filter

I was thinking in buying a K&N hi-flow cone air-filter for my 240, but it costs $130 (except ebay) so i was checking out different types of air filters and their components, I was looking at some new honda/mugen air filters that look like mini fans (round breathable sponge in a cage). So i was thinkin that maybe i can fabricate my own custom air filter like that instead. But i dont know about anything about legalities, if it would work (by what i know it should), or if its just plain stupid idea.

Re: making custom air filter

if you live in cali, it will be illegal. But any other state you will be fine. I bought a generic sponge filter off of ebay. You will need an adapter, cheaper to buy for less than $10. I only have about 20 bucks in my filter assembly. Ebay is cheap, and how can the quality of a sponge be bad.

I know that K&N puts in thousands of hours and a shit load of money into creating their intakes, but I'm sure it's all for nothing, I'm sure a sponge and duct tape will do the same.

I wouldn't cheap out on the air filter

K&N really does make more power and your buying one air filter for the rest of your life... Those generic and JDM ones mostly aren't reusable, a couple JDM ones are but 98% of the generic ones on ebay and those generic kits are cheap material and have to be replaced all the time.

The filtering material on a K&N is different, it allows more air in while filtering out more particles... I mean you are building a performance car right? air filter is one of the most basic mods you can do, do it properly young grass hopper.

Re: making custom air filter

Damn! I guess that I need to get a cotton element then. I knew my foam filter was cheap. I used it just to get my car on the road. But.....now I can just put a K&N cone on my adapter. I dont think they are more than $40. Still this filter has gotton me by, better than nothing.

I dont mean to sound like an ass, but that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard. Not running an air filter will screw up your engine. Plain old dust is hell on the rings and will cause them to wear out faster and your motor will start to burn oil after about 150,000 miles.
