Do they make a lower temp thermal switch for the malibu? Are there cheep and easy aftermarket termal switches? Where is the temp sensor for the fan located?

Re: engine overide switch- adendem

the fan switch is near the t-stat housing and also serves as the temp sender for the computer. Trying to put a lower temp one in may affect the fuel delivery and emissions performance, so I don't know if i'd try that. you could wire a toggle switch to the relay, and wire it thru an ignition controlled power terminal at the fuse block (to keep you from accidentally leaving it running and killing your battery), but these 3100 are set for the fans to kick on at 225-230, so I wouldn't sweat it.

Isn't 225-230 running hot? I know thats what they are set to come on. Maybe that is why they are always blowing intake gaskets.

yes, I do think that is too hot to run an engine. I think GM runs them this hot to meet emmision requirments. Anyhow, I think I'll sneek a peak at the wiring shematic for the fan system. Autozone usually has open manuals you can look at. Being an engineer, I know it's not a good Idea messing with the relays hit-or miss. They could controlled by the CPU to be ground switched or hot-side switched.

Thanks guys

I heard that the motors run hot for emissions too. I read somewhere here I think thatthe fans are designed to stay on after you turn off the ignition only when the coolent temp is 284F or above. By that time the fans would just be feeding the flames! Ha ha ha.

They shouldn't even put temp gauges in cars, just makes people worry about things that don't make a bit of difference. As long as it's not in the red, leave it alone.
