Question Air intake housing

I noticed on the air intake of my '94 Ultra that there are little hollow air "resevoirs" attached to the intake. I unscrewed one of the plastic pieces that attach to the air intake and it's just a hollow piece of plastic...what's the deal??? Are the resevoir pieces supposed to quiet down the air as it is whirled and sucked into the engine or something?? ...to keep this car sounding like an old man car? If i take off those pieces and just use duct tape or a hockey puck to seal the holes up, will more air enter the engine?? I ask this because my buddy had a '96 Impala SS and the air intake on those cars have two big hollow resevoirs (one looks just like a home plate in baseball, while the other looks like first base...lol ) in series with the air intake to restrict noise. So he rebuilt his air intake using piping from the plumbing section of Home Depot and it made a big difference in sound when he accelerated, made the engine seem "tougher" as he says, lol. So from his experience i'm assuming the hollow resevoirs are used to quiet down the sound when accelerating. Just wanted to know if anyone has tampered with those or have rebuilt their own intake setup with piping or other stuff and how the engine sounds when accelerating. Thank you!

they are there to slow the car down and restrict the air intake.. Get rid of all that stuff, I cut out my air box on my 91 and opened the air way conciderably and not only do i get better gas mileage and power but it sounds awsome when you get on it.. I am about to just get some custom air tubing and put a cone filter on the end of the TB...
