98 explorer odd starting problem

I've had this problem since I bought it about 5 years ago. I've been living with it but it would be nice to fix it. It's a 4.0L engine.

The problem is that anytime I start it when cold (engine not air temp) and for any reason it stops within the first couple of minutes it takes a lot of cranking to get it to restart. As long as there is enough battery power it will eventually start. Once it does it runs and idles fine.

For example if I use the remote starter and accidentally touch the brake peddle before getting the ignition turned on or sometimes I'll let off the starter a little too soon and it fires but doesn't start that's when I have the problem. Once it's warmed up a bit it always starts without problems. It seems like it may help to press the accelerator all the way down to get it to start but this may just be coincidence.

I've recently replaced the plugs and wires with no effect.

Have you tried to pump the accelerator a few times and then hold it to the floor prior to starting it for the first time in the morning? I am trying to get more info from you about the problem.

I had a similar problem with a 1997 Aerostar. I turned to be the IAC (Idle/Air control valve). The only difference between the problem that I had and the problem that you are describing is that for the first few seconds after the vehicle finally started, the idle was rough. Once the vehicle warmed up, the idle seemed to correct itself.

You need a new IAC valve.
About 65 bucks at NAPA

IAC valve was stuck. Didn't replace. Just used flat head screw driver to move the stuck piece. Has worked great for over a year now.

No, normally I don't touch the accelerator before starting. It starts great without doing that. It's only if it stops right away that it won't start again. I prefer to use the remote start in the morning on the way out to the garage because that gives me 30 seconds to a minute of idling to get the oil flowing before driving away.

There is the odd time that it will run rough for the first few seconds or so when it finally starts the second time but I assumed that was because I usually have the accelerator all the way down to get it to start by then.

I'll probably try cleaning the IAC valve. I took it off last night and it's pretty dirty. I need to get the right cleaner then I'll give it a try.

I think cleaning the IAC may fix the problem........if not, change it! Good Luck
