Transmission 323i

I have a 2000 3232i with 62,000 miles. I put the car in reverse the other day-heard a clang and now I have no reverse in the car. Local transmission shop says the "reverse band" is shot. He did not offer to do the work; said only BMW could do it and the repair job is $3,000!!!

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing breaking at 62,000 miles.

Same model, same year same miles, same problem. Had to change the tranny. Sorry.

That exactly what it is ! broken band on the drum for reverse. If you red other BMW FORUMS on the net it happened to so many people betwen 60 000 and 100 000 miles on 323 models equiped with GM5 transmission .Everybody expirienced same thing -sudden lack of reverse without warning ! Model affected 323 i, ci March 1999 to May 2000 (GM5,5L40Etransmission made by GM Strassbourg ,France) for BMW cars.

Happened just like you said. No warning signs. Just lost reverse.

Did you guys ever change transmission fluid before tranny broke down ?
