Angry Idle troubles

I recently bought a 1973 Nova - it ran great the first 2 days and now it is having trouble in idle. It will die unless I have gas on it and will occasionaly backfire as I pull away. When I bought it the owner mentioned it would need a new fuel pump and so I am hoping this will solve the problem, the carborator was also recently rebiult and I'm thinking it needs a tuning now that a tank of gas has been used.

Do these symptoms sound like a fuel pump or carborator issue?

All advise appreciated.

thanks

Re: Idle troubles

Probably Carb. But I would replace the the fuel pump if the last owner said too. What Kind of Carb is it. If its a Holley those will need alot of tuning. Try to get a book on how to tune holley carbs. Edelbrocks are they way to go, because they are literally just bolt on and go. Also might want to check the dwell with a dwell meter and check the timing; if you have a timing light. You could also be running rich. Good Luck

Re: Re: Idle troubles

Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time. Very helpful. It's a Holley but I'm thinking I might just drop in an edlebrock while I've got it up in the garage. will check the timing per your advise as well. thanks again

Re: Idle troubles

Your intake might be plugged with carbon, take your intake off pull the silver pan on the bottom off and check it.( do this if the intake is stock ). clean the carbon out put it back on and if this is the problem it should run fine.
