False Temperature Reading on Overhead Console

2000 Silhouette , 44000 KM

I noticed that the overhead console gives false readings for the outside temperature. For the first five minutes or so the reading starts out close to what it should be and then drops by about 10-20 degrees C followed by a gradual warmup to what is probably the correct temperature. Has anyone experienced this before? Hardly seems worth spending much money on this problem but it worked okay up untill recently.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: False Temperature Reading on Overhead Console

I've noticed the same problem on my 2000 Venture with 68K in the last month or so. So far I'm just ignoring it. Maybe there is a simple fix, but no time to dig into it.

Thumbs up

this takes 3 minutes to fix. Go to the GM dealer and order the ambient temp. sensor, its like 10 bucks. There is one screw/bolt that holds the sensor to the car, it is located just in front of the radiator on the passenger side when you open the hood. Its a small black sensor with a plug on the bottom and a pointy thing sticking up. Its on the right hand vertical radiator support, kinda directly behind where the front plastic grill is when hood is closed. Remove screw, unlug sensor, plug in new sensor, put screw back in. DONE!! Easiest fix i've done so far.....(the rear shocks are pretty easy too)

Re: False Temperature Reading on Overhead Console

Umina, thanks for the tip. I purchased a new temp sensor (GM 10248414) for $8.14 and easily installed it. Temp readout on my console is now what it should be. This saved me lots of troubleshooting time. Also, the dealer parts guy said they sell many of these, so I suspect floating temperature readouts are a common problem.
