Engine Problems HELP!

Here's the situation. 86' CJ-7 258 I6. Before I worked on it, it would not idle, would always die, even with the idle screw all the way in. Had a bad exhaust leak. Since, removed the manifolds, rebuilt the carb(allot of crude inside), installed a complete Borla exhaust system w/ high flow cat. Cleaned intake, installed new O2 sensor. Found the EGR tube froze so I capped off the ports (Intake&Exhaust). The vacuum lines were a mess, half weren't connected. So I simply reconnected the Dist.vacuum, and the PCV line and capped the rest. Timing checked manuelly, seems to be on(visibly).
Started the Jeep, started right up, but would not run unless the choke plate was 1/2 to 3/4 closed. Again would not idle at all! Noticed that #3 and#4 exhaust tubes were GLOWING red, the engine temp was just in the "green" from the "C" mark. No change in the idle or running with adjusting the fuel mixture screws. I think that the Carb is toast, but why the glowing exhaust tubes. ( these are stainless steel tubes, header) The whole exhaust heated up, all the way to the tip, discolored the exhaust tip( from chrome to bronze). Any ideas!! I would like to get this running right.
