Dont look if you're tired of Cobra Daytona coupe buildups!
Got interested in building my Gunze Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe kit. I decided to make the #5 car that won its class at LeMans in 1964. I have had a hard time finding reference photos of this car at LeMans. There are pics about, but most are of the 1965 version, and the details are different on the cars at every race they ran in, so I'll make the best of it.
I replaced the kit exhausts with my own scratchbuilt ones. The center one is the kit casting in white metal. ![]() A chassis shot. The chassis is made of white metal parts and brass tubing for the main frame tubes. (Actually the frame has been primered, the metal wasnt really white.) ![]() Finished chassis and wheels in this shot. Made the shiny wheel rims on my lathe. Goodyear markings are Shabo dry transfers - one of the most difficult things to get it right in modeling. ![]() Main interior parts. Gunze must have been smoking some good crack to believe making the interior sides from rubber (or vinyl) was a good idea. I replicated these in styrene and kept the wheel fender, as it would be difficult to make in styrene. Right side is kit interior, left side is mine. ![]() A shot of the body shell. Opened the vents in the rear and filled one of the small scoops on the right fender. ![]() Currently working on the interior. When thats fitted, I'll paint the body shell. Also made the rear lights on the lathe. |

Looking nice!
For those that fancey a Cobra Coupe with a difference check out the 1:43 kit that Ruf have just done. It replicates the buck that was used to hammer out the aluminium panels of the original car, and includes some vac formed panels to fit over it!

How could we be tired of Cobra?
![]() Exactly a Gunze kit build: so close to scratchbuilding! lol Sure the resin kit would be easier! You're on the way to make a wonderful thing of it! Great!

I'm not looking, I'm not looking!
Just joshin', great stuff, the scratchbuilt parts are awesome and will make this build a standout. Looking at the chassis layout pic you'd have to call this car mid engined! |

The scratchbuilt exhaust pipes are a dramatic improvement. The in-progress photos are excellent. Nice work!

Are you ever tired of looking at a Cobra Daytona?!
Keep on the good work. I think I can find you some photos of the '64 #5, from several books/mags. If you're interested, IŽll search and post it here. |

Here goes nothing.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also a remark: according to the "AC Cobra" by Rinsey Mills book, this Cobra as a flatter roof then the #6, once it was build with a higher "waistline". Hope you can find these usefull. |

Yes, they definitely help. Thanks. I got the body sprayed and decaled. Still working on the interior. I'll update with pics soon.

9/6/04 update
Update for Sept 6.
I see some inaccuracies now that I have DoubleFourValve's reference pics, but it still looks like a Daytona coupe. One coat of clear on it. I used Model Masters new lacquer paints for the body. Primed using Duplicolor primer. I used GM's Nassau Blue, which may be darker than Ford's Viking Blue, but it should be close. I had to hand cut the numbers, which was a pain, so they're not perfect. I also noticed the style and size of the number is not exactly right based on the new reference pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the mandrel and form I will use to make the brake ducts that go in the front body opening. One duct is shown. |
