Question upgrading tires - wider profile

I am going to buy new tires and looking for a little wider width. Currently I have the OE tires 2001 SE (225/50/17). I am looking at the Michelin Sport A/S 235/50/17 - will I have any problems with the stock rims being able to accomodate the increased width???
How much wider can I go with the current rims and the same profile?
Do I have to go lower 235/45?? 235/40??
Does any one have any pics of wider tires on the stock rims?

I would say 235 is the widest you can go. It wouldn't really be the profile and clearence issue in terms ov even wider than that, it'd simply be the width of the rim. Although, I am running a 235 tire right now, and I have an 8 1/2 inch rim.. So maybe 225 is the biggest you can go. I would call or email tirerack and ask em what they say as to recomended sized tires options.

Visit this site to help u ans some of those questions, http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html. 235 should fit on the rims but don't go any wider.

I e-mailed tire rack and they said that the tire would be too tall?? This doesn't make any sense to me? The width changed not the profile???????

the wider the tire, the closer it is to the wheel well, SInce your wheel well is curved, a wider tire at the same height might rub the inner wheel well.

Re: upgrading tires - wider profile

well if u changed the width then yes the profile would change...becuz the "50" on ur current tire is the percentage of how high the sidewall is compared to the width...with the 225/50's the sidewall is half the length as the width is...so if u went to 235'z u would have to go smaller profile, because if u stayed with a 50 then the profile would get larger, since the tire is wider...do u understand what i'm gettin at?? if u want a better understanding of this concept, go to the tirerack's explanation page...
