98-02 Z28 SS really faster than 98-02 Z28?

I don't think it is. Since the LS1 was underrated in the Camaro so as not to upstage the Corvette, I would imagine Chevrolet doing the same thing with the Camaro trim levels to encourage buyers to spend the extra money for the SS package. Anyone know for sure (dyno sheet comparions, etc.)?

The normal LS1 produces 310 hp, and the SS LS1 with SLP's ram air, exhaust and cat back exhaust this goes to 335. Other packages can offer special internals like Ed Pink rods and a lightweight driveshaft.

Re: 98-02 Z28 SS really faster than 98-02 Z28?

Well, the thing is, Chevy -says- that the SS makes 15 more horsepower, but I've heard that it really doesn't, and that it's just a marketing ploy. Since Chevy underrated the Camaro so that it wouldn't steal sales from the Corvette, I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same thing with the SS package.

Just open up the intake and exhaust on the Z28, and your right there with the SS.

Re: 98-02 Z28 SS really faster than 98-02 Z28?

nah, it all depends on the driver to tell the truth. The SS HAS A SLIGHT ADVANTAGE IF IT WAS ORDERED WITH A DIFFERENT EXHAUST AND LID! However, most LS1 F body owners that are interested in performance change those things first anyway. This would probably bring that Z28 ahead since the aftermarket Lid and exhaust will probably still be better than the SLP ones (the SLP lid that was rated one of the best was their Aftermarket, it was not available as an option, their option lid was different to meet OEM specs).

twdz28, there were no options for internal Mods to the SS. Pink rods were actually replaced by the LT1 powdered rods and the LS1 rods are much different than those. all LS1 cars came with Al driveshaft after 1999 I think.

Alright then, so if I were to buy a V8 Camaro, it would be pretty pointless to get an SS over a Z28...hey wait, I can't afford insurance/gas mileage on a V8 anyways. :/

hey, i see you own an silver SS too, as do I.

In standard SS Form they make 320 HP. In 2001, that went to 325. 345 HP was with the SS SE Pkg. (centermounted exhaust etc) Alot of SS's i've seen dyno around 295.

I've raced both and the SS is faster. I do agree it has alot to do with the driver also. The SS suspension seems to be different though. And the little things that are different under the hood or under the car come with a significant price tag. But I don't believe it's a "ploy" not everything is a conspiracy.... call it good marketing.

SS come standard with the exact same suspension as the Z28. However, there were SLP options for suspension. under the hood mods were basically limited to a different airlid and filter.

Re: 98-02 Z28 SS really faster than 98-02 Z28?

the only difference i got between the Z and the SS is that you feel like more of a badass when you're in the SS.. not much of a difference performance wise, but a nice chunk of change out of your pocket for the ss over the z28.., i've test driven a 2001 Z28 and a 2002 SS, and i enjoyed the ss more, but thats because it was a 6 speed compared to the automatic z28.. and the SS looks better

That's true, it'd be nice to have the SS badge. Plus, I don't think it's that much more expensive than the Z28, maybe 500 bucks on a used Camaro.

Re: 98-02 Z28 SS really faster than 98-02 Z28?

I have read into this alot....the LS1 F-bodies and the LS1 Vettes having the exact same engine yet somehow the Camaro is rated 310-325 hp and the Vette 345-360 hp. If you click the link..you can see that the power numbers are taken up higher in the rpm range in the Vette than the Camaro. I think if both were rated at the same RPM's it would be a lot closer.

http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.s...&&&usedcarstab

And as far as the LS1 SS Camaro having approx. 15 more hp than the Z28 is exaggerating a bit. The SS hoods on the Camaro are just for looks, only thing it has is a little bit more free-flowing exhaust, and an Auburn differential, and a more refined suspension, which, imo, only adds up to maybe 5 hp and maybe a 1/10th of a 1/4 mile time. But the hood and spoiler and SS rims really compliment the Camaro SS to look better than the Z28..imo
