Car makes noise only when turning to the right with engine running. You can take the car to a parking lot and make a constant turn to the right, and the noise sounds like a metal shop fan with the bearings going out, a light metalic sound. If you get the car up to a good speed while turning right say around 20mph and then shut the engine off, the noise stops right away. The car still coasting does not make the noise if the engine is not running. I took the serp. belt off and drove a short distance and the noise was still there when turning to the right. Sound is coming from down low like below the motor or trans. Tried jacking the car up and turning the wheels, but couldn't duplicate the noise. Apparently the weight of the car also has to be present to torque something enough to make the noise. It does increase with increase speed, but doesnt seem to be exact match. I have had 6 mechanics look at this including a dealer who charged me $35 for the wrong diagn.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. FF tiger |

Re: 99 Grand Prix GT front end noise turning to right with engine running
Sounds like you have a cv axle going out. It only makes noise when there is torque against it, and at coast there is no noise. I would bet it's the drivers side axle, as it makes noise turning to the right, which loads the left front wheel. My other guess is a right front hub bearing, which make noise when unloaded, but would be noisy whether in gear, engine running or not

The answer turned out to be the starter was bad. The starter drive was hitting the flywheel.
