The 3.1 is very good. I doubt you will get too many complaints from here.

My head gasket went at 145,000 and I put in a short block to get another 7-8 years out of it.

Besides that, normal stuff water pump 120,000, alt 80,000 and starter at 60,000. the replacements are still going.

Have heard of some problems with premature wear due to "piston slap" when cold.....best fix is to ensure correct manufacturer recommended oil is being used (5w30 in my 1990 3.1)

Re: 3.1 V6 engine

There is also a problem with the factory intake gaskets being weak. There is an aftermarket gasket set that is reinforced when the time is right.

Re: 3.1 engine

I have a '98 Cutlass with the 3.1 and only 21,000 miles. I had the intake manifold gasket replaced at 19,000 miles. The engine seems rather noisy on the top end when it cold. Other than these things the engine has been ok. Keep in mind I have been told by mechanics that this engine has been redesigned several times. Some of the earlier years have been the better ones from what I have been told.
