2.3 CL engine codes

The check engine light came on, the gas cap is tight. How do I check the engine codes to try to t/s it before I have it looked at. I bought it used & I don't have the owner's manual. Please Advise.

take it to a local autozone...the pull the codes for free....or at least they do that in dallas for free.
