check engine light is on

My check engine light came on in my Honda Accord, 1998, yesterday. It has 58,000 miles on it. Is this something that needs to be checked out by a professional?

Just take it down to AutoZone and they'll hook your car up for FREE and tell you what's wrong with it. Then go from there.

I'm currently having this problem too.

If your car runs fine, change oil regulary, it could be that you have bad oxygen sensors. You won't be able to pass smog check with this problem.

My engine check light came on and I narrowed the problem down to O2 sensors. I am getting them replace now. It would be cheaper if you know how to do it, otherwise mechanic would charge you about $400 to get it fixed.

there is a way to diagnose the problem yourself. on the passenger side by the right foot there is a plastic panel. pull it off and you will see wires connected to a plastic head that resembles a connector.(it should be blue) make sure the car is off. take a piece of wire about 3-5 inches long and jump the connector.(meaning- place both ends of the wire into each of the open holes in connector---there are only two holes and you can see the metal inside the holes.) with the wire jumped or connecting both openings turn the car key on to accessories(DO NOT TURN THE CAR ON) when you do this the check engine light will blink in a series of fast short blinks and long blinks. these flashes represent trouble code numbers that will tell you why that light is on. you can pick up a haynes manual and it will have the trouble code list. get back to me and tell me what you came up with. and i will also tell you what the code is if you want once you read it. good luck

6gen Accord has its OBD2 connector on driver side above kick panel, and its not cover by anything.
