1993 Corolla timing belt problem Question
I'm trying to fix my daughters 1993 Toyota corolla 1.6L engine problem.
I found that the timing belt sheared several teeth and needs replaced. My question is, when the timing belt goes in thai engine does it cause damage to the upper end, (valves, piston etc). The second question is the crank pulley bolt. Is it left or right hand threaded? I picked up a Haynes manual at the parts store and it doesn't specify. I'm brand new to this forum as well as to toyotas, can somebody please help me on this. Thanks! |

Re: 1993 Corolla timing belt problem Question
Have you done timing belt job before? if you never done it before maybe better to ask someone who have done it before then you just watch them. Is not like changing regular belt. Anyway to open the crank pulley bolt always to the left but you must have a special tool to hold the pulley or use the impact wrench to open it.

Yes I've done timing belts before, just not on a Toyota. The last honda I did the timing belt job on took out some valves when the timing belt broke. I did find the answer to my question on the Toyota causing damage when the belt breaks. The answer is no. Not on most Toyotas with the timing belt. The question on the crank pulley nut was also answered when I tried loosening the bolt. It came off counter clockwise. This means it's not left hand threaded. This was new to me because the crank or damper pulley bolts I'm used to are left hand threaded. I mostly work on Chevy small and big blocks and Ford diesels. Anyway, bottom line I've got the car running like a top again and no extra bolts nuts or parts. I did learn something new today and it was about Toyotas. Thanks for the reply and maybe this will help someone else!!!

Re: 1993 Corolla timing belt problem Question
Haynes manual says to jam a prybar into the flywheel and then loosen the crank pully(easier said than done, i did it with the engine hanging in the middle of a shop and it was still a bitch) none the less, it worked. The manual continues on to say that to remove the pulley (its a taper) you need to pry it off against the block (just be careful not to damage the oil pump housing or the oil pan)
