Question “Hard to Start” – What Do You Think?

“Hard to Start” – What Do You Think?
I’ve seen a lot posts on this board from people with this same (or similar) problem with their 1993ish-2001ish Blazers.
My 2000 Blazer used to start up right away, but now it will sometimes turn over 2-3-4 times before firing.
So I’ve been all over this forum, looking for what other people are saying about this problem. From what I’ve read so far, it looks like most people think it’s one or more of the following:
1) Fuel Pump
2) Fuel Filter
3) Fuel Pressure Regulator
4) CPI/Nut Kit
5) Check Valve
It also looks like most people have replaced the fuel pump and fixed it. But some people say they’ve had to replace the pump 2-3 times. (So maybe it’s not just a faulty pump, but something else might be causing the pump to fail?)
Some people say they’ve replaced the CPI & Nut Kit, and that fixed it.
And a few other people said it was the Fuel Pressure Regulator or Fuel Filter or Check Valve.
Now, I understand the pump, filter, & regulator, and check valve, but I’m not sure what the CPI & Nut Kit are, and I’m wondering;
1) Which part is most commonly the problem?
2) Which part, if it’s bad, could cause the other parts to fail? (Like if the pump is bad, could it cause the CPI to go bad, or something like that?)
Anyway - When I first started looking into this, I was focusing on the electrical system. So I replaced the alternator, belt and spark plugs. I also installed a new air filter, oil & oil filter and fuel filter, and I’ve run fuel injector cleaner twice. But it’s still doing the exact same thing, so I’m pretty sure none of that stuff is the problem.
So…What Do You Think?
-Kurt

When you replaced the Spark Plugs, did you replace the Spark Plug Wires?

Re: Re: “Hard to Start” – What Do You Think?

Thanks for the feedback.
I did replace the fuel filter, but not the plug wires. After it starts up, it runs fine though. No rough idle, no stalling, no SES, no codes, so I think the plug wires are probably ok. I’m just not sure if I should try replacing the pump or open up the plenum and look at the CPI or something else…

There is no CPI or nut kit on your model year. They were only made from 1992-1995.

Do you turn the switch to the on position and allow the pump to prime the system before you start the vehicle?

Or do you just instantly start it?

Re: Re: “Hard to Start” – What Do You Think?

Usually I let it prime first, sometimes I don't, and when I use my remote start, it waits to prime first before cranking.
This morning I didn't wait and it started right up no problem. - screwy?

hmmmm, I would check your battery voltage.

Voltage running =
Voltage engine off =
Voltage withj posts disconnected. =

Use a multimeter.

easy there.

If the ignition switch was bad, the engine wouldn't even turn over.

Gotta love the people that ask for help and then screw off and don't say whether it helped.
