2004 ext cab Tundra transmission problem
The 2004 full size extended cab pickup has a transmission problem. This has been verified by the dealer.
If you are using the gearshift overdrive button to switch from 3-4 and back again for slowing down on hills, if you use a quick tap to shift in and out of the overdrive the dash light and transmission will be reversed. In otherwords, with the overdrive light off (thinking you are in 4th gear) you are actually in 3rd gear. With the light on (thinking you were in 4th gear) you are actually in 3rd gear. This can only be reset by turning the ignition off.
According to the wiring diagram, this model uses a different electronic shifting sytem than other models. Why is now known.
This has been reported to Toyota from the dealer with no answer.
To prevent this from happening, push and hold the overdrive button for at least one second before releasing.
