New Vehicle Service
My '04 Tahoe is coming up on 3000 miles (purchased in early May) and of course GM is already trying to get me to schedule a service.
My question is that based on the owner's manual the oil doesn't need to be changed until the computer indicates it's time. (This is my first brand new vehicle and anything outside of every 3000 miles, much less a computer telling me when to change my oil, is odd to me). So I've been lurking around here for a couple months but I decided to register just so I could ask this question to you fine folks. Thanks Brian Edit: re-reading this I realized that I never really asked the question. On a new vehicle, do I need to have the vehicle serviced at 3000 miles or just wait until the Oil service light comes on? Thanks. Last edited by Danner0351; 08-28-2004 at 12:29 PM. |

Re: New Vehicle Service
It is recommended that you change the oil every 3000 miles or 90 days (3 months)...but..
The GM oil live monitoring system calculates your driving style (time to warm up, engine hours and other parameters) to determine if you can go longer between oil changes. According to GM this reduces the amount of waste oil produced and the expense to the owner of having their vehicle serviced every 3 months or 3000 miles. Depending on your driving style, the time between oil changes can be up to about 12000 miles.

Re: New Vehicle Service
I've played the 3000 mile game since I owned a vehicle at 16 and it seems to be cheap insurance.
Thank you Merlin. |

I own a 04 Tahoe with 6800 total miles. My oil light has not come on yet, however at 1100 miles, I changed the oil to Royal Purple 10W-30, along with the filter. I will change the oil and filter again @ 7000 miles.
I will be using 6K mile intervals to change my oil, due to the fact that RP is a high quality product, that does not break down too easily, nor does it get very dirty. |
