Exclamation Speed Sensor/Odometer/Fuel Gauge

RE: 1997 Jetta GL, 2.0 AUTOMATIC, 88K miles.
The fuel gauge fluctuates, speedo works at times so does the odometer, a couple of times checklight said VSS A problem with P0501 code, replaced both VSS sensors with a little plastic gear which can be fitted from the top of tranny, no use.
My Fear: Do I have to open up the entire transmission housing to check for any bad gears inside the tranny?
Please help!

Re: Speed Sensor/Odometer/Fuel Gauge

I doubt the problem is inside the tranny, more likely it's the wiring or instrument cluster itelf. If you have a good multimeter & a way to lift the car's front wheels I can give you a diagnostic proceedure.

Hi Boschmann

I would appreciate it if you can provide me the diagnostic procedure. Thanks!

Re: Speed Sensor/Odometer/Fuel Gauge

Well to start disconnect the VSS, turn on he ignition and connect the meter to pins #1 & #3 (outer two). You should have at least 11.5 Volts.
