1995 Pontiac Sunfire
Need some peoples thoughts on this. I found a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire 4dr. 2.2, auto with about 150,000 miles on it. It needs the head gasket replaced (as many do). Parts will run around $150.00. I can get the car for free but want to know if you guys would fix it or pass on it, I can do the work myself. The body and inside are in very nice condition. I need something for just local town driving with good gas milage. Any thoughts?

Re: 1995 Pontiac Sunfire
Price is right. I'd take it and repair the engine. You could even buy a used engine rather than repair the old one for $600 or $700. If you do the work yourself you coudl save on labor and have a good car.

Re: 1995 Pontiac Sunfire
you may need a reman cylinder head. The 95 and 96's had a head cracking problem, especially if the casting # ends in the letter s. I say this just so you know what you're getting into, but I'd say if you can do the work yourself, the car is definitely worth it. A head costs around $300 just for reference.

Re: 1995 Pontiac Sunfire
Thanks guys. I new these cars were bad about blowing the head gasket but now i'm a little worried about the head being cracked. I hate to put another engine in without knowing for sure if that head gasket was replaced. I'll pull the head and check it. thanks.

Re: 1995 Pontiac Sunfire
Well I pulled the head with hopes that it would be the head gasket, it was a cracked head. A crack between a water jacket and heat bolt hole. Will try to find a good head to replace it with. Was not much fun getting the head off either. I guess the price is right and I have more time than money. Thanks for the help too.
