Question about #1

Hi all Im new on this forum, and i don't know much about volkswagens.
I am building a trike, It's a half breed 1969VW/Harley. I need to find #1 on the dist because the dist drive shaft is 180 deg out. the book saysto turn the crank till the rotor points to the notch in the dist body. If the dist is 180 degree out does this apply, Does the rotor need to point where the notch is or 180 out< CONFUSED

Re: about #1

If the distributor shaft is in wrong you will have to find TDC #1 another way. Turn the crank pulley to align the TDC notch with the case halve seam. You will have to pull the valve covers to see if this is #1 or #3 (see which has some valve lash). If it's on #3 then turn the crank 360 degrees to #1 & align the notch again. The distributor rotor is now facing #1, wire the cap so #1 is above te rotor (you may need to turn the distributor housing some to get it right). Wire the rest of the cap 1-4-3-2 clockwise looking from above. Then set the timing.
