305 V8 C1500?

does anyone know where i could find the VIN numbers on my 89 C1500? I baught it from my uncle and he pieced a lot of engine together with different parts since he has had it. He told me it's a 305, and i think it is too, but i wanna make sure. Plus i just wanna know where the damn VIN number is and everything. I probably have found it but its too dirty to see.

I painted the air filter box thing black, and i put those chrome valve covers on. (was a bitch cuz they were upside down AND backwards. lots of fabricating to get them on) everything else thats not normal my uncle did. It's a 305 right? Anything else you can tell me about it thats not obvious?

Check the windshield and inside the door jamb on drivers side. Then go here http://www.syty.org/old/vinguide.html

Re: 305 V8 C1500?

305's and 350's have the same outside dimensions, so it is hard to tell just from the picture. Maybe someone else will be able to tell though.

Re: 305 V8 C1500?

Look at yoru RPO codes inside the glove box. L05 is a 350. If you don't see that, then it has to be a 305.

Re: 305 V8 C1500?

That's what you need to be looking at, lol. Those are your RPO (regular prodcution options) codes, lol. Read through those numbers and if you see L05, that means you have a 5.7L TBI (throttle body injection), if you see L03 that means you have a 5.0L TBI.

Now thats one way to tell, if you could read your vin number, then the 8th number would indicate what size engine you have. If its a K, you have the 5.7L (350), if its an H, you have the 305.

All of that is only true however if its the original engine that came out in the truck. Now if the engine's been replaced, you'd have to run the numbers on the block.

yeah my uncle has put every part of every other engine on there im pretty sure. so its confuzing a bit haha. I was thinking those were codes but i dont know whats what. Ill go look right now and see if i see them crazy numbers.....ok i saw a L03 in a random spot in the numbers, so im guessing its a 305 5.0 right? And its Carb and all that so TBI 305 5.0...right? haha

Number chasin'

Get a mirror and a flashlight (and a good buzz) Look on the back of the block below the distributer and above the bellhousing for the tranny. Should be a code there. you can find code matching sites on the internet. Also look and see if there is a lip where the block sticks out past the front of the passenger side cylinder head. That would be on the side facing the radiator. The serial # should be there. I Have a 65 C10 and when I bought it, dude says "Yeah, original motor Blahzay ect."
Sounded funny to me cause as far as I knew, they didn't put 327's in C10's till 66. Stranger things have happened and it was a highly optioned custom cab. I Got all the numbers crawling around this motor and this is what they came bake as; Block is 66, Heads r 68, intake is 67, exhaust man. is 69. Lucking I wasn,t loking for # matching. This will piss you off cause you can't see s**t and some #'s r just a blob.

Re: 305 V8 C1500?

Well, that means your truck was bought with a 305 TBI. I think they made about 170 hp.

Re: 305 V8 C1500?

get me the vin number out of the bottom driver's side of the windsheild and i will tell you what every single letter and number means. In 1988 the 5.0 or 305 put out 165 hp @ 4400 rpm. 240 foot pounds of torque and has a compression ratio of 9.0:1 Stock fuel system is a 4 barrel Carburator. 88 was the ONLY year of this body generation that offered carburetor. All other years of 5.0/305 were TBI.

Re: 305 V8 C1500?

That's interesting, lol. I didnt know for 88 GM offered the 305 with a carb, lol.

That 9:1 compression ratio is pretty high actually, i think the 5.3s are just at 9.6:1 or so now.
