higher compression turboing with cams

I spoke to a guy at school yesterday who drives an old fox body mustang svo, the 2.3 turbo motor. I fucked up the other day and got my ass handed to me at a light not far from school, the same stang. Well thats irrelevent but I finally met him. He puts almost 550 to the ground at 11:1 compression.

At first I was overly skeptical thinking thats way to high to turbocharge any more than a few psi, then he tells me 25 lbs. The way he described it to me is, he uses a cam with a longer duration and lift to get the valves to overlap thusly eliviating the predetonation while gaining the power the longer stroke gives him as well as the turbo.
This seems completely possible, it has been burning a hole in my brain since yesterday and I'd love to get as much info as possible, as well as anyones opinion.

Excessive cam overlap can reduce total compression. Very inefficient way to do it though You're just blowing all your air/fuel mixture out the exhaust. I cant see an 11:1 car running well at 25 psi on pump gas. On race gas sure.

Re: higher compression turboing with cams

If i see him again, which i hope to, ill ask him the details. Thats a logical point, the compression stroke would exhaust the good mixture, sure, but im wondering how much and how long, maybe its open so long as to only allow say 1/11th of the stroke redered useless. Still 10:1 compression, plenty to spin that turbo like a mad man. im really intrigued by this not really making any plans. Thanks GSx
