you can cross the explorer off that list. i had one of those and it's not suited at all for serious off-roading. ground clearence is low and has a relatively long wheelbase. i would look into a jeep cherokee or jeep grand cherokee. the toyota 4runner too. a grand cherokee seems more surefooted on unstable ground though imo.

ya, ive heard good things about jeeps, also i should mention im not lookin to be a serious off roader, i camp alot and want something good for the trails which can get pretty tough where i go campin but im not lookin to do and boulder climping. does have to have good clearance cause of the huge rocks sticking out of the ground on the dirt roads (up to 10 inches)

if you have a lot of things to haul in the back or want a roommier suv, then yeah th eexplorer works great and has reasonable ability for light offroad use. but if you'r elookin for 10" ground, forget it - explorer of that year has less than 7". and i think even the grand cherokee has maybe +\-8.5", maybe the 4runner i'm not exactly sure. 10" is quite a bit of ground clearance of these suv's.

Yeah, Land Rovers are built for off-roading. Especially the older ones with manual tranny.
