Question May I ask why you retard timing on a Turbo Engine?

I just wanted to know the exact reason why timing should be retarded for a Turbo Car...

Re: May I ask why you retard timing on a Turbo Engine?

it depends on the air/fuel mixture, o2 temp, tps & knock, amungst other things. the retard will comensate for longer durations of combustion, its not a universal retard setting. you might need to retard of increase your fuel or timming at diffrent bands of the rpms. it all depends on what your log says.

wanna worry less about detonation for your turbo setup, then buy this, and you'll have a peace of mind.

you can make me offers before it ends

$2100 a month for someones who has a BA in the Army Military pay sucks A$$. I guess the benefits, allowances, and student loan repayments makes up for it. At least its a garuntee job after college.

If you want money dont join the military!

I had a Drill instructor tell me once,"If you want to kill and get paid for it, then this is the place."

Re: May I ask why you retard timing on a Turbo Engine?

Retarding of the timing is just a way of preventing detonation if it's occuring. If it isn't don't do it, because it also delays the fireing process of the engine, which causes you to lose power.
Another way to prevent detonation, is to richen up the mixture, and run colder plugs. Also higher octane gas does wonders to prevent detonation. If you have a knock sensor (obd1 B series(not B18b), and obd2 D/B series), when the engine detects knock, or ping, it will automatiaclly retard the timing up to I believe 8 degrees? This isn't much, but it helps.

normally you disable your knock sensor and when you tune your car, you tune it so it doesnt knock, ususally you just use the knock sensor to tell you if your detenating so you can just pull timing or increase fuel as needed

Re: May I ask why you retard timing on a Turbo Engine?

I wasn't aware you could read the stock knock sensor. I've never tuned my car's with it off. I perfer running higher octane, or adding fuel to retarding timing. However, that's just personal preference. The higher advance you can run with out knocking, the more power you get, and timing does a good deal to make horsepower.

with all the liberal BS around today id just like to say Thank you, my grand father served and my father served...i have plans otherwise...my grandfather would like to see me join the Navy but i am planing on going to UCF and getting my degrees in engineering, graphic design, and business...but anyways...retarding the timing is a way to prevent knocking...knocking is predetonation and often results in torched pistons...i think the rule is 2-3 degrees for every 50-100HP added?...or you can drop your compression ratio, or rich up the fule mixture, or run higher octane with colder plugs....or in higher boost cases (over 1 atmosphere) a combination of the two....

if you got your af set and you limited to pump gas and it knocks, i wouldnt give it more fuel to get rid of the knock, i would pull more timing.

usually a conversative number is .75 degrees per psi, and then add timing and see when it begins to knock.

some guys say to put it at .5 and then subtract till it stops knocking but then your gonna be detenating and could ruin parts, better to be safe and start with no knock.
