Downshifing

Sup ppl .... just curious as to what happens when you downshift, let go of the clutch slowly, causing the car to stop. What makes that happen? Also, does that damage the clutch? Is there a right way to do it? I think thatz really cool lol but if it's gonna burn my clutch in the long run then i'll stop.

i downshift ALL the time. lowering the gear in your can have 2 effects. if u downshift and hit the gas you'll hit a different part in your powerband and accelerate at a higher rpm. shift into 3rd and get too 3000 rpms let off the gas. the motor will slow your car down. it has an opposite effect when you dont hit the gas. if im in 5th doin 65 ill brake to 45 and ease it in 4th. u dont wanna downshift into a gear that will put you higher than 3000 rpms. let it drop from 3000 to 2000 in 3rd and you can almost stop. it just makes it easier on the brakes. im sure it does put a lil stress on your motor and clutch but if your easy on it your car will be fine. now that i just read that....does it make sense??? lol

Re: Downshifing

yeah, downshifting is good for two things, letting the engine slow the car down, and less work on the breaks, if done right of course.

Re: Downshifing

Our cars have notoriously bad synchros, if you are going to downshift, learn to doubleclutch properly to prolong the life of your tranny synchros.

Re: Downshifing

I usually do heel and toe downshifting, lol. So I can let go the clutch faster without jerking the car back and forth.

My friend knows someone who accidentally downshifted from 5th to 2nd lol ........ his engine shot a piston right through his hood and made a hole.

Some people here are confused about downshifting, its when you go into a lower numbred gear and the revs go up and the resistance from the drivetrain goes down. And I don't believe that tripe about the pistion blowing straight through the hood lol. Sounds intersting but totaly imposible lol.

Well consider if you were doing 120mph+, went to shift to 4th and went into 2nd. If you actually managed going into 2nd, you would be WAY past redline. I've heard the same story before in a different scenario.
...now how you could mistake 2nd for 5th is beyond me...

Re: Downshifing

you downshift when neccesary. as your driving in traffic and it slows down from 70 to 60 you downshift to 4th. and things of that nature
