Can't rev past 2500RPM and balck smoke! WTF??

Well here's the deal... I traded in the car. Yup, I know.. dumb. but she's gone. I explained everything to the guy at the dealership and told him that he shouldn't fu(k with anything cause it's setup fine right now and doesn't need any adjustment. I told him I'd bring down all the manuals to everything and some of the stock parts I had for him today. Well, I get there today and he's like "I'm glad you're here... your car won't run!" He takes me over to the car and I start it up....

The car starts up fine, idles like a charm. I'm thinkin "ok... whats up". then I notice the CEL. He tells me to rev the engine, I get it to about 2500 rpm and it boggs down hardcore and starts spittin and sputterin. It's also throwin out a huge cloud of black smoke. I start lookin around and notice the S-AFC isn't monitoring the way I left it. Meaning somebody fuct with it. I checked the correction level and it's at 0+-.

Honestly, I don't know how to tune the thing very well. So I tinkered with it a bit, but don't think I accomplished a whole lot. Just for shits and giggles I popped the hood and checked to make sure the turbine on the turbo is still spinning and that there are no cupplers lose and blah blah blah. everything was totally fine.

Here is what everything was doing. The boost guage sat at 20vac just like always at idle, and would go up to 0 when I reved it (quite quickly... which didn't normally happen). The EGT was fine, not too high. but I guess you'd have to drive it to get a better reading. And my retarded AF guage was pegged at rich... but it was bouncing around any time you give it gas. so probably doesn't mean shit. there was a small bit of oil on the valve cover and hood, but the guy said that the dipstick wasnt all the way down and he thinks it came from that. The profec B was still exactly as I had it set up. But the AFC had def been messed with.

My quesion is this: Do you think that the AFC is the problem? She's not getting gas? or maybe it's somethin else? I'm gonna take my datalogger down and try to tune the afc for them tomorrow. Maybe somebody can give me some tips. I have a tuning guide I found online. I"m gonna try that. But being able to talk with someone will help more. Maybe I can call jake. So, does anyone have any input on what this problem may be? Any and all info is appreciated! Thanks in advance and sorry for the rediculously long post!

Check and make sure the sensor type is Karmann, and the cyl# is set to 4 with the arrow pointing up and to the right.

If there is oil on the spark plugs i dont know if this could be it just whipe it all off unhook the wire clean everything take a screwdriver wrap a rag around it and clean it all until there is no oil that wont be the problem though you should still do it though.

check your fuel pump... i just had this happen to me on the GST and the O-Ring on the fuel pump was gone! other than that check the engine code...

I don't know if this is what coolguy meant but if the spark plug holes have water, oil, etc in them, the spark could short through it. Clean the holes! Also a bad wire might cause problems like this. Had it happen to me. Thought there was a serious problem but it just needed plug wires. Check in the dark and see if you can see arcing. If you can't, still could be the problem, if you can change the wires. Since youre gettin rid of it, get a bone-yard set. 8mm magnacore rule though.

Car got brand new magnecore wires on it and NGK plugs about a month before I got rid of it. So I dunno if that would be the problem. Might have gotten some oil in the plug well when I was puttin the valve cover on it though. Not sure. I'll mention that to them. I was supposed to go down today but it didn't happen. So far I've got Fuel pump o-ring, plugs, and afc... anything else to check? I only wanna go down there once. I've got better things to do. Thanks all

ther eis a very good SAFC write up on RKO. print that out and take your now non-owner car out for some serious tune time [i.e. drive it like you stole it ]. blame it all on them and make sure it needs new tires before you deem it 'satisfactory for re-sale'

i agree with Vince ^^^ i think some of the rookies over there desided to try and check whats that blue display for. lol. what kind if a dilership is that. what, they can't find what the problem is. do what Vince told u. check that write up for the SAFC. my 0.02$

What you are describing is almost certainly too much fuel. No 6 packs here, I'll put up a 30 rack on this one... Limited rpms, blacks smoke, yeah...

Odds are its in the AFC settings. If you know what size injectors are in the car divide 450 by current injector size, and subtract 1. That will give you the injector compensation percentage. Not exactly finely tuned, but it will run perfectly fine. Its not your car anymore, I wouldnt waste one minute more than I had to getting it to run right.

EclipseRST is right, check the O ring on the fuel pump, one day i started my car and it hasatated to start out of no where and i smelled gas, it turns there was a rip in my O ring, also if you see black smoke, it's probably your head gasket, it goes pretty often in eclipses and the smoke is your anti-freeze burning! happened to me!

Black smoke is too rich, not coolant. Coolant and water will cause white smoke. Ripping the oring on the pump will cause fuel starvation, not an excess of fuel.
