HELP! Accord '92 Auto Transmition or Cable Problem?
Hi, all
I have a 1992 Honda Accord with Automatic Transmition. Everything seems to be running fine BUT it's REALLY Hard to move the shifter from and to Park (P) and Drive (D). Eveything runs okay once I have it on Drive (D) but getting it out and to PARK it's just way to hard. Question is: Is this a transmition problem or maybe just a cable? is there a way to adjust or replace the cable? Please, help. |

I'm guessing you've checked the transmission fluid, correct?

Is the tranmission fluid black or reddish-brown? Does it have a burnt smell to it?

Yeah, try changing the transmission fluid. If you want to do it yourself I can give you instructions.

Re: HELP! Accord '92 Auto Transmition or Cable Problem?
1. Purchase some transmission fluid (get the good stuff, it isn't like you have to do this often).
2. Other tools you'll need for this job include jackstands (to support the car in a raised position), 3/8-inch ratchet (with extensions), a drain pan (capable of holding at least 8 pints), newspapers, and clean rags. 3. The fluid should be drained immediately after the vehicle has been driven. Hot fluid is more effective than cold fluid at removing built-up sediment. (Use safety gear, as fluid will be VERY hot) 4. After the car has been driven to warm up the fluid, raise it and place it on jackstands for access to the transaxle and drain plugs. 5. Move the equipment under the vehicle, being careful not to touch any of the hot exhaust components. 6. Place the drain pan under the drain plug in the transaxle and remove the drain plug with the ratchet - it's located on the right (passenger's) side of the transaxle, near the bottom. Be sure the drain pan is in position, as fluid will come with some force. Once the fluid is drained, clean the drain plug and reinstall securely. 8. Lower the vehicle 9. With the engine off pull out the dipstick then add new fluid to the transaxle through the dipstick hole. Use a funnel. Do not OVER fill, as that could cause problems. Make sure you fill it so that the level is between the lines on the dipstick. 10. Start the engine and shift the selector into all positions from P through 2, then shift into P and apply parking brake. 11. Turn off the engine and check fluid level. Add fluid to bring into the cross-hatched area on the dipstick. Hope this helps, keep me informed. Last edited by hondaokie; 08-25-2004 at 04:40 PM. |

Excellent.
What type of OIL would you recommend? Synthetic 10x30w? |

Don't you have to check the trans fluid when the engine is running?

Re: HELP! Accord '92 Auto Transmition or Cable Problem?
no just warm up the engine, then shut it off, and quickly check it. But, if you're referring to the fluid change instructions, the engine should still be warm after doing all that so it would still give good readings. Engines don't cool very quickly.

Re: HELP! Accord '92 Auto Transmition or Cable Problem?
cbr, are you going to change your oil while your under there too? If not, then you might just want to use what you've been using. As for transmission fluid try Dexron II.

Re: HELP! Accord '92 Auto Transmition or Cable Problem?
I did the OIL change a few weeks ago so I don't need. I've always done oil change in my car but I never messed with Transmission before (there is always a 1st time) I'll use Dexron II for this tonight, Is there a OIL weight to it? I'm jsut making sur eI'm using the right stuff.
Thanks again and I really appriciated. |

Re: HELP! Accord '92 Auto Transmition or Cable Problem?
Okay I hear now that DEXRON II has been replaced with DEXRON III so when you goto the store look for a bottle of Valvoline Dexron III AUTO Transmission Fluid.
