Fuel gauge

Hi.
My friends 97 Caravan run out of gas, but the fuel gauge pointer was between the red and the first white line. After refuelling the car runs fine. Can the gauge be that kind of inexactly?

yes these vehicles are known to have a bad sending unit.. The gas tank needs to be lowered to removed sending unit
