temp spiking

hey ya'll

i got my baby running again today, took her for a spin to the shore and back and when under a bit of load or in traffic the temp spikes up one bar, depending how long i am stationary i think it mite go up two
the engine is fully rebuilt, block went in the dipping bath and head was checked (skimmed etc)
have brand new:
water pump
thermostat
radiator flushed (was out of another car and 80% blocked)
radiator cap

burped car (have car jacked up and radiator at highest point, didn't seem to be any air bubbles)

when i turn the heater on it takes 20 seconds to a min to drop back down to normal temp

any suggestions or ideas as to what could be causing this... could this be normal on a new engine? (although i don't think so)

thanks for all ya help

Re: temp spiking

well now, i have a new one for ya'll i still had temp spike problems
but today i believe i have truly solved them...

now i posted on a different thread regarding the ecu spitting out codes if the o2 sensor isn't working.. the fact mine wasn't spitting codes when i unplugged it while running
now ppl came up with a valid point that it doesn't do anything while idling but as soon as you drive it would run rich as
so i never thought anything else of it really...
the other strange thing was that every time i tried hooking up my air/fuel ratio gauge i couldn't get a reading off it... doesn't matter what i did i got nothing

so today i thought about it and came up with the theory....

the engine uses fuel as a coolant as well... what if the o2 sensor isn't working and i'm running lean all the time and therefore not enuf fuel to cool the engine... the heat would then travel from the center of the block towards the water galleries hence heating up the water and my temp going up

sooooooooooooo
i changed the o2 sensor for a diff one
(usually from cold start up while idling my car gets up to normal temp really quick)
now this time when i start the car it isn't as quick... i takes about a good 10-15kms before she gets to normal temp which is much longer than previous (yayyyyyyyyy)
this time i drive with O/D on and heater off so she is under more load than usual when pulling up hills (as i'm still 500km into running her in so i'm not allowed to boost lol i actually have to use the engine)

and for 30odd kms she didn't move above normal temp
(usually she will have by this time)

so yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhooooooooooooooooo

so if you have new everything including temp sensors........ and still spike
change ur o2 sensor

but i wouldn't wanna speak to soon
tomorrow i will know for sure if she's gonna go above temp again

but hopefully she's all goooooooooooood

Re: temp spiking

okkkkk... it would seem my o2 sensor hid my problem for a few days... temp spiking came back
i found that my engine was NOT overheating but the temp gauge went up soooo today i bought a genuine toyota temp sensor and now it seems problems are solved

Re: temp spiking

mines an 87 7mgte found out the backfiring... never had i encountered it before on my car but i found it was rev limiter lol... low trans fluid was the cause.. or i hope so hehe
ur car sounds good, lowish mileage and cheep hehe... well i'd start saving for the big bhg anyhow haha... you'll love working on your own car... get together with experienced supra ppl and you'll learn alot on your car and much appreciate you don't have to pay a mechanic to do it for you hehe

supra's are all that who needs hatchback chikky cars lol
