replacing a 87 4runner transmission

hey, im thinkin of buying an 87 4runner with a rebuilt engine for $3000...the engine only has like 7k on it, but the truck has 300,000+

i was thinking of getting it and just getting a new tranny...cuz the guy doesnt know the history of the tranny.

any advice would be very helpfull!!!

Is it an auto or stick?
If it's a stick, take it for a drive and listen for any noises in any gears when you give it gas. If the bearings are going out it usually begins in 5th and 3rd.
If you know the transmission is bad, then you could have it rebuilt somewhere in the range of 700-1100.00.
