Engine revs by it self on G3 teg.

I have a 95 Integra LS Auto. As I was leaving my school's parking lot this morning, I noticed that the engine was at 1200 rpm and when I completely let go of the gas, it revved up by itself to 1700 rpm (at less than 10 mph). And as i was driving, everytime I took my foot off the accelerator (brake was not used--just coasting), the needle on the tach would not fall down immediately like its suppose to once it realizes that no pressure is on the accelerator, but rather very slowly. Also, when I would brake, the engine would rev down to 700 rpm and then for a brief second or two, rise back up to 1100rpm by itself. I've also recently noticed that when I start my car in the morning, the engibe starts at 1400 rpm and then rises by itself to as much as 1700 rpm. My car felt very sluggish. & everytime I car reached a higher gear there would be a slight jerk--the gear change wasn't smooth as it use to be. (I had a tune up done 6 moths ago)

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? My car is completely stock drivetraion wise and it only has 44K on it. I plan to mod my car but this is making me very wary. I appreciate any comments or suggestions.

P.S. In themorning after I first start my car, I wait for the engine to rev down to 800rpm before putting my car in gear.

I will try to answer your questions except the gear shifting part for now, but first I will need some answers.

Did you swap another engine into your car?

If so, did you make sure that the computer is for the new engine?

How long have this happened?

What's your exhaust system status (from the exhaust ports to tip)?

I am assuming that you had made sure it's the right computer (cause I smell fishy from the PROM).

Anyway, it sounds like there might be a problem with the O2 (oxygen) sensor, if you can try to take the O2 sensor out and take a look at the color of it (I am assuming it would be black due to the carbon deposit). There is a way to bench test the sensor to see if it's working probably, but it's too much to explain and you will need tools, so it's better just to change a new one anyway.


Correct me if anyone thinks it's something else.

Thanks for replying man. To answer ur questions: my car's engine is completely stock. My exhaust looks fine although it does it has a little rust is at the tips. I was planning to change it once I have enough money to buy an Apexi one. I appreciate any help you can provide, thanks man.

Do you know how much a new oxygen sensor would cost plus labor? thanks man.

I bet you got on it (the gas) really hard, just before it started doing this...?

Is it over heating? Does it do it all the time or only until it is at normal operating temp.?

It could be anything from computer or sensor problems, to something as simple as a tune up.

If you don't work on cars get it to a shop, right away.

If it only does it when the engine is cold then its cold idle speed controler/solonoid/thingamabob what ever you want to call it depending where you went to school.

It's triggered by the ECU to run the car at higher than normal RPM untill it warms up, and use's manifold vacume to hold the throttle open a little bit. However thay fail with age, and do exactly as you have discribed. (my car currently cold idles at around 1,500-2,000rpm)
However they are not cheep to replace, (at least not for my car) so you might just have to put up with it.
If you do deciede to replace it its only a 10min job so it easy to do.

Your G/box is shifting funny becuase of it as well.

Dont panic its, not life threatening to the car either, just annoying.

Would that problem cause a tranny to skip as well?

I have no idea why your Tranny is skipping, prehaps you should just take away the skipping rope.


If your talking about a gearbox then what do you mean by skip?

the tranny skips cos its a honda. they never quite figured out automatics. kinda like how american standards are a pain in the ass.

i know a lot of hondas that just started skipping after a while.
