2004 maxima stalls on occasion at startup

I have a 2004 Maxima with 8400 mi. 4 or 5 times now it knocks at startup then sounds like a diesel and stalls. Any ideas what the problem may be. I think it only happens at cold start but not sure because it's my wife's car, she is not sure. could not be duplicated at the dealer. They want us to leave it to try it in the morning. But it happens so rare I'm not sure it's worth it. I suspect when winter comes to the northeast the problem will become more constant. I'd appreciate any feedback

Turns out we had the keys reprogrammed and have not had the problem since. We also had problems with the front strut. It went bad and made a thumping sound. We also had a button on the radio get stuck. Turns out they new there was a problem with the struts in these cars. I find it amazing they let us buy the care with a known problem. In all Peter's Nissan had the car for four days. This, in my opinion could have been cleared up in a day if they cared to please their customer. To boot, the car was a greasy mess when we got it back. We didn't bother to even tell them that, we just wanted out of there! Not sure if I would go back to this dealer or Nissan for future purchase.

It is valid though, I mean, you pay 30 grand for something, you expect, at least I expect everything to be perfect.

Hey, I could live with the radio button thing. It was the bad strut that bothered me. When we brought it to the dealer they said " Oh yeah, we know about that, there is a problem with the struts, we'll replace both." My point is, if they knew, they should not have let me drive off the lot until they replaced potentially defective parts. This aside, the car is a blast, rear wheel drive would put this car over the top.

FOr Nissan, its cheaper to let the cars go, and take care of the few problems that come back, as opposed to fix every 04 maxima out there. THey only recall the stuff they are forced to.

Re: 2004 maxima stalls on occasion at startup

The struts and the radio button is not a real serious issue. I read some article a while back that the top of the line BMW's such as the 500 and 700 series had a major problem in their electrical system. The was a short in the system which fried the ECU. I read this back a while ago so don't hold this against me, i might be alittle off. These are car that can go up to $100,000 easy and your comparing that to a $30,000 maxima.

Hey and for what your saying, last time i checked no one is perfect. Believe me if all the car companies were perfect you wouldn't take you car in for service or you wouldn't have a breakdown. You expect some problem(s) in any new or used thing you buy. So you come prepared. Thats why they have extanded warranties on just about everything.

Breakdown or malfunction as a result of wear and tear, I understand. But breakdown or malfunction as a result of a known error by the manufacturer is immoral, yeah, it happens all the time. But it just sucks.
