K2500 1997 abnormal engine run

Coming across this very strange problem, it actually happened to the old engine and the new engine that has been fitted in.

Truck Model - 1997 Chevy Truck K 2500 Pickup 4WD V8-350 5.7L

The truck has more then 350,000 Km on it, I swapped out the engine since the rest of the truck is still in good condition, however prior to swappign i came across the following problem.

Whilst driving the truck rpm would drop to 0rpm, as if the engine stopped, then suddenly comes shooting up way past 3,5rpm and then back down to 0, then does a tug and pull motion. and goes dead.

I turn the ignition off while truck is still in motion automatic transmission shift into neautral to fire it back up, and a bang "backfire" i turn off and come to a complete stop.

Took it to garage they claim it was the computer that need replacement, so they swapped it out. Today the truck as a new engine and a new computer so odometer reading was from 0km till suddenyl today the problem came back at 6200KM exact same problem.

The garage is nto sure, as well as 5 other places, anyone coming across this problem please help.

Re: K2500 1997 abnormal engine run

Have you had the computer reprogrammed with all available updates? You need to know what the fuel pressure is when this happens. Could be a loose wire or bad connection. Anything is possible when you swap out the motor. I am inclined to believe that if you didn't have this problem before the engine swap, it's directly related to it. But even more, I think that it's electrically related. Make sure all grounds are connected on the engine properly, if a sensor does not have a good ground. How can you expect it to communicate properly to the computer? Do you have any stored codes that may point you in some direction? Hope this gives you some ideas. -Chris

Re: K2500 1997 abnormal engine run

I had the truck put in at the dealer, turns out the the computer cable was badly seated int he housing after hitting some rough bumps on the road, and that was never spotted. Since the cable is very old they recommended to have it changed by a new one if some serious offroading is looked into the future, thanks all for the help
