Re: Restoring 69 SS 402 BB

was the 396 a 402 already in 69? I thought they wited till 70 to do that. Anyway, there is not a lot of first gen support over here but ask whatever questions you have.

Re: Restoring 69 SS 402 BB

GM did not offer the 402 in 69. Only the big blocks that were availible in 69 were the 396 and 427. And a big block in 69 would not have a 350 auto trans, it would have come with the 400 turbo. I would suggest getting some restoration books before you started to do a car.

I was gonna ask if the 350 would even bolt up to the big block. I thought it should have had a 400.

Re: Restoring 69 SS 402 BB

The 350 tranny will work just fine, unless you do hella mods to the motor. I was going to do the same thing with my 73 Camaro, a 402BBC and a TH350. I have a friend who uses a 427 with a TCI TH350 amd pulls low 10s. Be prepared to do a lot of work putting in a big block into the 69. You'll be better off then I was with my 2nd gen Camaro. Those 1st gens have so much after market it's crazy! If you have any specific questions just shoot.
I have been restoring my 73 for the past 3 years. Recently I have ripped out the tranny, put a new cam in the car, and I am prepping the car for paint. I have done a lot to my car. Nice to see someone else with an early Camaro. Everyone in the Camaro forum has new 3rd or second gens.

Re: Re: Restoring 69 SS 402 BB

I apoloigize if I was harsh, i've been having a really bad Monday......
If you are going to start a restoration you should read up on the car you are about to restore. That way you can tell what engine and tansmission is the right one for the car you are working on. Yes a 350 trans will bolt up to any early big block chevy, but to be correct for the year 69 big blocks came with a 400 turbo.

Re: Restoring 69 SS 402 BB

The 402 was droped into my 69 , so I am working with a new motor and a rebuilt 350 trans. Yeah I am going to try to get some pics up soon. So what can you tell me in general about a 402?
