timing problem i think

ok, so i got the water pump off my 1991 gt with the 1.8l and i got the new one back on but now i cant get it to start. I think it is my timing but i dont know how to set it forward or backwards at all. Can i do it from the crankshaft pulley? Are there marks to line up? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!! I am desperate!! Thanks!!!

Jon

ok, i found the marks, and lined them up and all the car did was sputter like it wasnt getting enough gas. if i push in the gas pedal it would stay for a little longer but still died. if it needs more gas then do i advance or retard the timing. and do i have to from the crank pully or should i do it from the cam pulleys? i thought maybe the cam pulleys because they control the valves. input please!

Whether I retard or advance mine, it ruins it completely...
