i'm not a mechanic. so basically, i was wondering how much you gear heads usually charged to change a timing belt, or how much anyone would charge. my car has 102k miles, so i'm sure its time.

Re: timing belt
depends on wher eyou get it done. but as long as you're doing the timing belt, get the water pump and tensioner pulley replaced too. that'll save you some money doin all that at once. i would say it's a good $700-$900 job at most places.

Re: timing belt
are you screwing with me???? $700-$900????? for a belt replacement?? shit. for that much, i'll risk doing it myself. the engine already has 102k miles, if i fuck it up i'll just buy a newer one with less miles. shit.

Doing it yourself is not too difficult as long as you have the manual, some time, and some patience...and a shop to do it in. I've never taken my car into shops and have saved thousands. Timing is one thing that has to be done right tho or else you're car will run like shit or not at all. Make sure you follow the directions carefully if you do it yourself. Good luck

Re: timing belt
I had to pay 1200 to fix mine but that was after it broke and trashed the engine. The guy had to take the whole thing apart and replace all the valves 3 of which were bent, and replace a lot of other parts too. The dealership where I have my waranty said 3 to 4 grand so I thought I got off pretty cheap.
