Question Engine Flooding????

I have a 91 Silverado, 4.3 l v6. It runs great. Atleast untill it warms up... or after uve driven it already that day.. I drove it to the store the other day after I put new plugs and plug wires on it. It ran PERFECT. I turned it off went inside for maybe 3 mins came back out.... it had a lil trouble starting n then cut off.. I smelt gas so i believe the engine might be flooding? Once it gets started n runs for a min its really smooth again unless u drive it for over 20 mins or so.. then the idle gets a lil rough and sometimes the service engine soon light comes on.. but when it does it only stays on for maybe 2 mins? After i drive it for a while and pop the hood i smell gas.. Does anyone else have this problem? or know how to fix it? I have EFI so if it is flooding, it has to be some kind of sensor?

Re: Engine Flooding????

Ok, I too have an 91 w/4.3. First, jumper the "A&B" on the diagnostic block just under your steering colunm. And see what codes it gives you. Sounds like you may have 2 things wrong here. First, your TPS sensor could be going, this is a simple replacement, fairly inexpensive. Next is a little more expensive, your fuel pressure regulator. The dealer is the only one that carries a complete unit. About $130. My 91 TBI was all clogged with carbon, and the fuel pressure spring was broken in 3 pieces. After cleaning out the TBI and replacing all the seals, replacing the pressure regulator assembly it runs great.

Re: Engine Flooding????

Advance Auto sells the "rebuild" kit for the TBI, and its fairly simple to do. Don't soak the sensors in cleaner! This trashed my TPS, so it too got replaced. WARNING!!! You can open up the fuel pressure regulator, but the spring has a LOT of tension on it! If it is broken(spring) highly recommend going to the dealer for the assembly. Direct bolt on. Look through the posts on this site, I have the complete process listed. Listed under "4.3 idles ruff"
