help! car wont go in gear.
okay so the past few days ive been wearing down my crappy stock tires by trying my hand at drifting (in anticipation for real rims and tires). but now i think i may have really screwed something up, my car will start and run but dies when you put it in gear (i have a automatic by the way), it did this the other day but after a few restarts it was fine, but this morning it did it and no matter how many times i try to start it, it stalls the second you put it in gear.(along with jerking abit).
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I FUCKED UP? |

Re: help! car wont go in gear.
Probably your torque converter.

Re: help! car wont go in gear.
The 240sx auto isn't too popular. I'm not sure on the aftermarket support available for it. Sorry. I say google.

LMFAO.....
dude I work in a transmission shop, we've been open for 33 years, and I've been there since I was in diapers. I have never seen a car do that because of the transmission. That has to be some sort of an engine problem if the engine is stalling out. What your describing is what can happen to older cars with a carb when you first start them up and put it in gear without it warming up. Since your car is not carb'd obviously thats not the case, but other things with the engine could be making it act similarily. Maybe a bad MAF meter, ignition, or fuel. I would check those 3 things first IMHO. if your torque converter fucked up, it would basically be like your car is in nuetral with the engine on, it would just sit there and wind out when you give it gas, not stall. This would usually be how it feels on most transmissions when they need to be rebuilt badly. Sometimes if you overheat the right pars you can weld clutch packs together. I don't know if this is a problem with Nissans because every transmission is essentially different. Try giving it some gas in every position for the gears on your transmission. Put it in P and rev it, R, N, D, 2, 1 etc... Also with the car running on a flat area in park check your transmission fluid. It should resemble red, and be full. Try revving it up in every gear like I said and tell me what happens, tell me if it stalls, bogs, or just winds out. |

well, i can only rev it in park and nutral, once i put it in gear (ie: d,r,1,2) it stalls out without even a chance to rev it. transmission fluid is red like it is suppost to be at and the fluid leves are fine.

oh i almost forgot, when it did this the other time, when i finally got it going it wouldnt go over 2k rpm, (bogged i guess) and then after a few minuts it leaped forward and was back to normal, and i was able to drive it all day, started up fine, stopped with no problems.

Re: help! car wont go in gear.
if it does that again, hold your revs up yourself and dump it into gear.

yeah, i tried that and i think that a neutral drop could have been the cause of all this, it did spin the tires nicely however.

oh jesus, nuetral drop is the ABSOLUTE worst thing you can do to an automatic transmission
![]() you probably welded together a clutch pack haha |

hmm clutch pack welded together eh? that sucks, any idea how much that will cost me? i have to have a shop do it seeing as how im only 17 and dont have a garage.

most people can't rebuild automatic transmissions no matter if they got the tools or shop. It is very complex and harder then rebuilding engines or anything else along that line. Just because you can install an exhaust system or pull off your head doesn't mean you can rebuild a transmission.
Probably 1-2k's.... depends on shop, depends on damage, depends on what parts shop uses, and depends if shop is honest. |
