How much do you tip??

I'm just wondering how much you guys tip your foodserver at a restaurant.
I usually work in the back putting orders together, but sometimes wait tables at my local Chili's. I am so sick of getting shitty tips for no reason! Many times the guests will compliment me on my great service and thank me for doing such a great job, then leave me a fucking $2 tip on a $30+ check. How the fuck can I pay bills with that shit?!
WTF?????
Then there are the complete ass holes who are just outright rude to me as soon as they sit down. It's not my fucking fault they had a bad day or whatever. Don't take that shit out on me, I didn't do anything! I'm trying to fucking feed you!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that....be polite to your servers, they are there to help you!
And for God's sake......FUCKING TIP THEM!!
If you can't afford to tip at least 15% (providing the server did a good job), don't go out to eat YOU CHEAP BASTARDS!

Ok, I'm done

Boo Frickety hoo!

People here don't even GIVE tips, why? Because it's your bosses job to pay your fucking wages, not ours. Why the hell should I do your bosses job?

Where the hell do you work? Here, the minimum wage here is $5.25 per hour I think. I tip well-beyond 15%, about 1/4-1/5 of the value of the meal. lol. Suffice to say, at least $10 bucks for $50 meal. Hell, my mother tips $5.00 to the cash register guy for take out (since he takes the order and hauls the food in for us). But of course, most of it depends on the pleasantry of waiter/waitress. Good behavior and service pays.

So go get a better paying job. I'm not trying to be mean, but being a waiter/waitress isn't the best way to go about making money and paying bills. A cashier at a convenience store makes better money than that.
As far as tipping goes, my theory is, the hotter the waitress, the more money i tip. If it's a guy, he better do one hell of a job to earn a good tip, otherwise he's getting the standard 15%.
For the last word on tips, just check out the opening scene in Reservoir Dogs, and listen to Mr. Pink. Wiser words have never been spoken.

But why should they be expected to care? People go to restraunts to eat, not give charity.

Get a better job, or better yet- dob in your boss, $2.13 has got to be in breach of local labour laws...

Karen, I understand your frustration. I used to be a waitress at a Denny's and it is frustrating when you try so hard to be nice to people and take care of them and try to make their meal pleasant and then they don't appreciate it in return. I don't know about other places, but here in Oregon we have to claim our guest check totals and then pay taxes on 15% of that, whether or not we actually received that amount in tips. Also, it's sometimes legal (I don't know the technicalities) for restaurants to pay their employees less than minimum wage with the assumption that they will receive tips to 'even it out'. Where I worked, we never got raises. The manager claimed that as we got better, then our tips would go up, so why should he pay us more too??

BTW....I don't mean to be a bitch here, and we don't have Well's here where I am and so I don't know what kind of place it is, but I do know that alot of older people who receive social security (or other fixed income) sometimes rely on their tips to make ends meet. So just because someone is an old lady doesn't necessarily mean that she doesn't care.

Personally, I start at 15%. And I go either up or down from there depending on how the service was. (And --when my kids were smaller--how much of a mess we made...lol) But I always leave more than 10%.

Tipping might seem like charity sometimes when you know that the server is also getting a wage, but it is a custom here and our laws and regulations (read: 'taxes') take that custom into account and assume that the server is bringing in that income. When they don't receive it for whatever reason, then it sometimes can hurt them financially.

Re: How much do you tip??

I usually tip between 15-20% depending on how the service was, Restaurants pay waitresses low hourly wages because it is expected for customers to tip because of the service provided, You have a server who caters to your every need and pours your coffee etc.. and the customer never has to lift a finger, if you dont want to tip your server than you shouldn't go out for food and expect it hand delivered to your table. My first job was a at an italian restaurant, you wouldnt believe how rude people can be to the waitresses.

Jimmy and Vikki here seem to understand the points I was trying to make. Mostly, just be nice to us!

And the answer to my "problems" is not to get another job....I know that most of you guys know I have a 4 month old baby. This job is the easiest way for me to work around Kevins work schedule so he can watch Nicholas when I'm gone. Kevin has a set schedule at his job, but I do not. Whenever I need money, I can go to work.

Re: How much do you tip??

i just double the tax and then round up so thats around 15% I guess. What pisses me off is when waitresses act like they "deserve" to get a tip. I say you have to earn ur tip. Being hot and flirting helps, but at least show up with a smile and make sure our drinks are always full and that we don't have empty plates all over the place. Oh I have heard that they hate it when a waitress asks "Do you want any change back?" Like they are trying to put you on the spot for how much you should tip. This usually results in lower tips overall so thats just a suggestion.

EXACTLY!!
I know how to do a good job (i have been waiting tables for 4 years~)and I know when I have done a good job. I never ask if they need change back, I always say, "I''l be right back with your change", then if they don't need change, they have the opportunity to tell me so. And I aggree, there is nothing worse that a server who dosen't take away your empty plates....that annoys the shit out of me when I go out to eat.
