Re: Is it hard to steal a nova?

Install a hidden kill switch, that grounds out the negative side of the coil. No one will know about it except you. You can also get an alarm from www.Partsexpress.com and wire it in yourself. I bought an Audiovox APS-785 from them for my 96 Z71 You can get an alarm with simple features. And for your Nova it would be simple to install, as long as you have a basic understanding of 60's electrical systems. It can be made so that it looks factory. If you want a 62, also seriously consider getting a Pertronix Ignitor. I have two Corvairs with one in each and a Accel Chrome coil. The investment of a Ignitor will save you so much grief from having to adjust the point gap in the distributor constantly. The quality of the points these days is nothing like it was in the 60's. I get better gas mileage and easier starts with the Ignitor. Runs about $70, well worth it, and EASY to install. Check out this site and then contact them for a retailer in your area or online. If you pay more than $75 not including shipping, your getting ripped off. I tell everyone I know with a points type factory ignition to get one. Haven't had one complaint yet. http://www.pertronix.com/ Good luck on your Nova. -Chris

Re: Is it hard to steal a nova?

Kill switchs are just a name. Kill switches are just a simple two way, single-pole, single throw, on-off switch. YOu just connect one side to the chassis of the car for a ground, and the other to the negative side of the coil. When you want to keep the car from starting just turn the switch "on" and the primary side of the coil will not be able to saturate, thereby not creating spark. Questions??? -Chris

Radio Shack and Hardware stores are actually better. You can find all different shapes and sizes and not be limited by the parts stores selection of "automotive only" switches.

Re: Is it hard to steal a nova?

Yea, it's that easy. Let your car run and then flip the switch. It will die immediately. Your ignition switch kills power going to the coil, your spark is controled by the points opening and closing, which are grounded to the distributor. By hooking up to the negative side of the coil, the points are bypassed and the coil can never energize. Try it! -Chris

No you will not harm anything, however, your computer may set a code for a problem in the ignition circuit and cause your Check Engine light to stay illuminated. -chris

Re: Is it hard to steal a nova?

Make sure your ignitor gets a full 12V or charging voltage when the engine is running. By the way of the instructions, it tells you to connect directly to the coil. Check the voltage going to the coil, on my Corvairs I have a resistance wire built into my factory wiring harness. I had to bypass that wire in order to get 12 volts to the coil and the Ignitor. -Chris
