Belts and stuff
Okay I have an 89 RS. The damn air pump is starting to make a loud noise, so being that I dont need it, or the air conditioning I want to take them both out. My problem is the serpentine belt. It will be way to much belt if I do that. Do they make a smaller belt or different tensioners? WHat should I do?

Re: Belts and stuff
There are placement pulleys you can buy from gmpartdirect for about 40 bucks each and reuse the original belt, or there is a way to rerun the belt and bypass the smog pump but you need a shorter belt.

well the air pump itself is starting to seize up. The smog pump is gone. So What im basically asking is if there is a smaller serpentine belt that would fit on only four pullys instead of the six. And since the tensioner is on the AC unit It would have to be a really close fit. I can adjust the altenator a little bit, but not much. The more I talk about this the more impossible it seems.

Re: Belts and stuff
only thing i can suggest, is to take off the belt, and then have someone hold the tentioner where it would be if a belt was on the pullies, then take a peice of string and run it around the pullies per the manufacturers method, only changing it if you have to, then measure that length of string, go to napa and they sell belts based on lenth in inches, buy the one that is closest to your measurement, and hope for the best.

Re: Belts and stuff
thats what i had to do when i pulled my a/c. it works, but dont use string; strings stretches so you wont get a very accurate measurement. use like speaker wire or something if you can. also, when you go to get the belt get one size larger and one size smaller, just in case, and return the ones that you dont use (itll help you from making multiple trips to the parts store for a belt)...

A different belt routing is necessary. Have it come up over the top of the water pump, back under the water pump then around the crank and off the bottom of the crank to the AC compressor. All of your accessories will turn correctly. Use a Dayco 968K6 belt. "REFUSE TO LOSE"
